Performance Center (in Finnish Esitystaiteen keskus a.k.a. Eskus) is an artistic platform founded in 2009. It’s a working and meeting place for artists and other professionals working in live art and performance, as well as their umbrella organization in Finland. Eskus seeks to promote live art and performance, supports artists in regards to internationalization and professional development. In addition, it rents rehearsal studios and office space for performing arts professionals. It’s located in an old industrial building in Suvilahti, a lively cultural spot in Helsinki. Eskus has nineteen members and they a located around Finland, northest in Ivalo, Lapland.
Eskus’ key activities are: Organizing events and seminars to further the position of live art and performance in Finland and create interdisciplinary and international discussion and collaborations; offering a residency programme for local and international artists; facilitating and promoting projects by the member organizations and individuals.
In 2018 and 2019, the main project of Eskus is “Sata ja yksi salaisuutta” (“Hundred and One Secrets”). In the project, performance professionals hold workshops for young people in small localities around Finland. Eight municipalities are going to participate in the project each year. The project is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation (Taide²) and the Ministry of Education and Culture.
